✦ Things That Happen as You Walk the Straight Path

As you draw nearer to God, He draws nearer to you — with gifts which, were they unveiled to you, would delight your heart, and with a blessed provision meant for souls 🤍.
Satan, however 📛 desires nothing but that you lose the way and follow in his footsteps 🦶 — wandering between paths, living in heedlessness, never awakening 👀 to rise, tremble, and implore God to bring you out from misguidance into light. He does not wish for you to taste the nearness of God, Exalted and Majestic.
Yet, in succession, certain experiences come to the believer as he journeys upon the Straight Path and draws closer to the Majesty of the Most Loving, the Most Merciful.
Before that, Satan will lie in wait for you — discouraging you, beautifying distractions for you, urging you to turn away.
No ❌ — do not obey him 📛. Prostrate and draw near.
And know that God is the Truth and speaks nothing but the Truth, and that Muhammad ﷺ does not speak from caprice.

The pursuit and the reward of drawing closer to the Majestic Lord.”
🗯️Al-Ghazali affirms that when God draws His servant near to Him — a nearness of care and subtle grace, not of distance — the servant begins to taste within his heart traces of divine bounty that are not attained through mere effort, but are gifts and bestowals.
Among the most prominent of these are:
⸻
1. The Lifting of Veils
The veils of heedlessness are removed from his heart, and he begins to see realities as they truly are:
• He sees the world as fleeting after once thinking it great.
• He finds obedience sweet after it once felt burdensome.
• He tastes sin as bitter after it once seemed desirable.
⸻
2. The Sweetness of Intimate Prayer
In supplication and remembrance he discovers:
• intimacy instead of loneliness,
• serenity instead of agitation,
• and a joy in obedience greater than the joy worldly people feel in their worldly gains.
Until seclusion with God becomes dearer to him than mingling with creation.
⸻
3. The Light of Insight
A light is cast into his heart by which he distinguishes:
• truth from falsehood,
• divine prompting from satanic whispering,
and thus his intention becomes upright after the wavering of his will.
⸻
4. Ease in Obedience
Acts of worship transform from heavy obligation into facilitated grace, and he finds himself gently carried toward goodness without strain.
⸻
5. Detachment from All Besides God
He does not renounce by force; rather:
• the awe of the world falls from his heart,
• what is with God becomes magnified within him,
• and he finds intimacy with God when people feel estranged.
⸻
Thus, the greatest transformation the servant experiences when God draws near to him is this:
Obedience moves from struggle to love,
and from habit to inward witnessing.
He worships God:
• not out of fear alone,
• nor out of hope alone,
• but out of love, intimacy, and a conscious witnessing of divine grace.
For al-Ghazālī, this marks the beginning of the station of spiritual excellence (iḥsān):
that the servant worships God with a constant presence of heart —
and all of this is from God’s grace, not merely from the servant’s striving.
